Spilling the Beans

Golf Girl

I am, quite possibly, the worst golfer in the Metro DC area.  Inexcusably bad.  Mythically bad.  But I love, love, love to play.  Up until about 2 weeks ago, I hadn’t picked up clubs in 2 years which inspired me to buy a set of clubs and bag for $134.00 (Go Amazon!).  My colleague and I found an 18 hole Par 3 course that we’ve now played twice.  I lost 2 balls in the drink today but hit well and by “well” I mean that I didn’t  it myself in the head with my own club.  I putt for shit.  My two best holes had me 3 over Par and I felt terrific.

Add to golf there are a lot of skills that I possess in which I am really bad.  I’ve run 6 marathons but none of them under 4 hours.  I figure skate but wiped out almost a year ago breaking both my wrist and ankle.  I swim even slower than my per mile running pace if that’s possible.

The gleaming silver lining in all of this is that I was raised by people who encouraged me to try new things and to do them for the joy of doing them and not for the accomplishment of being the best at them.  So even though I shot a 61 on the front 9 at this ghetto-course where we were reprimanded for having our cart in the tee-box (note that there is no discernable difference between the tee-box, fairway, rough and cart-path at this peal of the prairie), I still had a great time.

Your “dad” is going to be so proud of you! Plan to play golf here in Kansas City on your next visit. Be warned — I am going to take lessons!
